Sutton Bonington Hall - a brief history

Sutton Bonington Hall is situated behind the high brick walls along the Main Street in Sutton Bonington, Leicestershire.  Through the large wrought iron gates the Hall can be seen in the surroundings of the superior landscaped gardens.  Most of the Hall was built by Beaumont Parkyns during the reign of Queen Anne.  The oldest part  of the Hall is the pantry with walls that are approximately 3 feet thick.

In 1825 the Pagets, a Loughborough family of merchant hosiers and bankers, bought Sutton Bonington Hall.  Sir Ernest Paget, who was the Chairman of the Midland Central Railway from 1891-1911, further enlarged it in the 1870’s.  His father had also been the director of the M.C.R. in 1843 and so they built a private platform in the grounds of the Hall so that passing trains could be stopped at the Hall for them.

For over a hundred years the Pagets and their descendants let the field across the road from the Hall to the village Cricket Club.   This is why one of the bedrooms at the front of the house looking over the field is called the Cricket Room.   In 1982 the Parish Council purchased adjacent land to develop as a public playing field and the Hall field was returned to pasture which ensures the enchanting views from the front bedrooms.

To this day, the Hall remains in the ownership of descendants of the Paget family.  The present owner is The Lady Anne Elton who grew up in the Hall and resided here until January 2000.

The gardens reflect the history of the Hall - The rose beds in the garden are designed to look like E's for Elton.  The are also topiary bottles and bells to reflect the local industry.

In the year 2000  Henry and Ali Weldon took over the lease of the Hall and began hosting weddings. They now manage the Hall through their company Maverick Venue Management.

In the first year at Sutton Bonington Hall they arranged 4 weddings in addition to various lunches and conferences.  In 2001 the figure for weddings rose to 12 and the year that after we doubled it to 24.
We now host an average of 65-70 weddings each year, plus a variety of other events.

Maverick Venue Management also manage Prestwold Hall, Norwood Park and an Outside Catering business.

More than just a wedding venue

Sutton Bonington Hall is more than just a wedding venue.  We regularly host other important family celebrations at the Hall.  In this way families can revisit and enjoy the Hall more than once!

We have hosted Christening Lunches and 'Welcome to the World' parties, for families to celebrate their new baby with a family gathering at this beautiful venue.  Occasionally the parents were married at Sutton Bonington Hall and choose to revisit the Hall for this next special step in their lives.  We could also host Baby Naming Ceremonies at the Hall, as an alternative to a church christening.

We also host wedding anniversary celebrations. Whether it is Ruby or Golden or perhaps a 10 year wedding anniversary you are celebrating we tailor the event to suit your requirements. Perhaps a Sunday Lunch would be best, or an evening dinner dance.  Call 01509672355 or email enquiries@sutton-bonington-hall.com with your ideas.

The Hall has been the venue for a few Golden wedding celebrations, and the families often bring elements of their wedding day to the Hall. Displaying old wedding photos and newspaper clippings from the day.

In the last few months we have hosted a special 50th birthday evening party, which the birthday girl organised herself so she had the party she wanted. In contrast for a special 70th birthday celebration, his family organised a surprise party at Sutton Bonington Hall, which had also been their wedding venue a few years prior.

One of Maverick Venues

Some of you may not be aware that Sutton Bonington Hall is actually part of a larger family of Wedding Venues within the East Midlands.  Maverick Venue Management looks after events at Prestwold Hall in Leicestershire and Norwood Park in Nottinghamshire.

Prestwold Hall was the original venue that Maverick took on, located just outside of Loughborough this stately home is incredibly popular.  Weddings of up to 150 guests can be accommodated.  Civil ceremonies can take place in the Library, or there is a church on the estate from which your wedding guests can walk through the gardens to be greeted at the Hall with a refreshing drink!
.

There is also a new Maverick Venue opening on the Prestwold Estate.  The Cowsheds have been carefully converted and now offer a fanastic and unusual space for weddings and parties.  If you have been searching for a more rustic barn style wedding venue, look no further!

Norwood Park is just outside of Southwell in Nottinghamshire, and again caters for larger weddings than we can at Sutton Bonington Hall.  Norwood is situated in fanastic gardens with stunning countryside views.

How to find your perfect wedding venue...

First of all, if you are recently engaged - Congratulations!

Hopefully after the celebrations of the engagement calm down you can move onto enjoying planing and preparing for your big day.  However, for some couples this is a difficult step into a world they know little about - where do you start!

We have put together a couple of hints and tips that we pass on to couples as they visit Sutton Bonington Hall, and hopefully they may be of help to you too!

  • Keep an open mind - in the early stages of searching for a wedding venue don't rule out a venue to soon.  There are so many types and styles of venues around the country let alone just in the East Midlands that you may need an open mind to understand the opportunities each venue offers you
  • Visit a few venues - But not too many all at once! - Even if a couple views Sutton Bonington Hall as their first venue and falls in love with it, we would always encourage couples to view another venue or two just to cement your previous feelings.  It is such a big decision, we want to ensure you have made the right decision for you.  Do spread viewing out over several days though, couples that have visited 6 or 7 venues in one weekend often can't remember what the first venue looked like!
  • Come back for a second visit - We always invite couples to arrange a second, or even third viewing, and also you may want to bring parents or a friend on this second visit for a second opinion.  Often parents see things slightly differently, and ask different questions, so if you are all agreed on a venue you have probably found the right one!
  • Dates - The more flexible you can be with a wedding date, the more opportunity there will be for you to book you favourite venue.  We offer to pencil a date to couples for a fortnight to give you time to check that your church or the registrars will be available to marry you, but also to check that your family hasn't got a holiday booked!
  • Ask your wedding venue about suppliers - We have a list of suppliers (such as photographers and florists) that have worked at Sutton Bonington Hall in the past.  This can be invaluable to our couples as it is far easier to use suppliers who are familiar with your chosen venue. They will already know where the best photo opportunities are, or where your might want flowers without you having to tell them.
Wishing you a beautiful wedding day and a long and happy marriage from everyone at Sutton Bonington Hall.

October at Sutton Bonington Hall

This Autumn has been incredibly beautiful, we love seeing the trees in the garden change colour.  It creates a fabulous setting for our events.

This October Sutton Bonington Hall hosted a Christening Lunch and a corporate event as well as the weddings each weekend.

We hosted a wedding that had been organised from New Zealand on the 5th, our Groom saw Sutton Bonington Hall for the first time just a few days before his wedding!

The following day our couple brought an Asian theme to their wedding.  The cake they had chosen was really colourful - a real taking point. It matched the bridesmaids saris too
Photo: Our bride and groom today have chosen a very colourful wedding cake, one layer is carrot cake, the other chocolate so I'm sure their guests are looking forward to them cutting it!

Photo: Instead of a traditional evening buffet our guests on Saturday were treated to bowls of curry, perfect for a chilly evening!

For the evening, instead of the usual evening buffet we served a variety of curries in hand sized bowls.  It's a perfect warming supper for a chillier autumn evening, all the guests really enjoyed it.

October also say Michele Gledhill return to the Hall to dress the conservatory for a wedding.  Michele created a fantastic look for our couple, it really came alive as the sun went down!
Photo: And here is the conservatory by night - the fairy lights look fantastic! Gledhill - Flowers & Styling

Towards the end of October we hosted one of our most intimate weddings for a lovely group of 14 guests.  Those privileged enough to be invited had a truly special day and were treated to a fantastic menu including a pan-fried fillet of Derbyshire beef, wild mushroom gratin, roast garlic mash and seasonal vegetables.

We also opened our doors for an Open Afternoon - with lots of visitors, some who have already booked their wedding for 2013 and some who we hope will choose Sutton Bonignton Hall
